How to Care for 18K Gold Plated Jewellery

October 7, 2026

Good jewellery does not need much care, but a few small habits make a big difference. Here is how to look after 18K gold plated jewellery, and why each step matters.

1. Perfume first, jewellery after

Perfume, body lotion and hair spray contain alcohol and chemicals that can dull the finish. Put them on, let them dry, then wear your jewellery.

2. Keep it away from water where you can

Take it off before a shower, a swim or a workout. Soap, chlorine and sweat wear plating faster. Even if a piece resists tarnish, there is no reason to test it every day.

3. Wipe it after wearing

A soft, dry cloth takes off sweat and skin oils in a few seconds. This is the single easiest habit to build.

4. Clean gently when needed

For a deeper clean, use lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap and a soft cloth, then dry fully. Skip abrasive cleaners, baking soda and toothpaste. They scratch the plating.

5. Store it dry and separate

Keep each piece in its own pouch or a lined box, away from damp bathrooms. Pieces rubbing against each other can scratch the finish.

6. Rotate your pieces

Rings and bracelets see the most friction, so they show wear first. Rotating pieces keeps each one fresher for longer.

What affects how long the shine lasts?

  • Your skin and sweat. Everyone’s chemistry is different.
  • Friction. Rings, bangles and kadas rub more than earrings and pendants.
  • Weather. Heat and humidity are harder on all jewellery.
  • Care. The habits above matter more than anything else.

Because these things vary from person to person, we do not make lifetime or “never fades” promises. We make our pieces well and tell you honestly how to look after them.

Sensitive skin?

Antifikar jewellery is nickel-free and hypoallergenic. If you notice irritation with any jewellery, stop wearing it and check with a doctor.
