What is Anti-Tarnish Jewellery? A Simple Guide
October 6, 2026You buy a pretty gold-look bracelet, wear it a few times, and soon it looks dull or leaves a green mark on your skin. That is tarnish, and it is the reason “anti-tarnish jewellery” is one of the most searched jewellery terms in India. This guide explains what it means, in simple words.
What is tarnish?
Tarnish is a change on the surface of a metal. Air, moisture, sweat, perfume and soap react with the metal, and the surface turns dull, dark or greenish. Hot and humid weather, like Mumbai’s, makes this happen faster.
What does anti-tarnish mean?
Anti-tarnish jewellery is made to resist that reaction for longer. Two things decide how well it does: the base metal underneath and the plating on top.
1. The base metal
Stainless steel contains chromium, which forms a thin protective layer on the surface and helps it resist rust and discolouration. Many anti-tarnish pieces use a stainless steel base for this reason. Antifikar pieces are made on a stainless steel and copper base.
2. The plating
Plating is a thin layer of gold over the base. PVD plating (physical vapour deposition) bonds the gold finish to the surface in a vacuum chamber, which gives a harder and more even coat than ordinary electroplating. Our jewellery is 18K gold plated by PVD.
Is anti-tarnish the same as waterproof?
No. Anti-tarnish means the piece resists tarnishing. How long any plated jewellery keeps its shine still depends on your skin, sweat, perfume, water and how you store it. That is why we do not promise “never fades”. We give you care tips instead.
What does hypoallergenic mean?
Hypoallergenic means the piece is less likely to cause a skin reaction. Nickel is a common cause of itching and rashes, so nickel-free jewellery is a good choice for sensitive skin. Antifikar jewellery is nickel-free and hypoallergenic.
Anti-tarnish vs regular gold-look jewellery
| Anti-tarnish, steel base, PVD plated | Regular thin-plated jewellery | |
|---|---|---|
| Resists discolouration | Better, with basic care | Often fades sooner |
| Skin comfort | Nickel-free options | Depends on the base metal |
| Price | Mid-range | Often very low |
How to choose anti-tarnish jewellery
- Check that the listing names the base metal, for example stainless steel.
- Look for the plating type and carat, for example 18K PVD.
- Read the care instructions. Honest brands share them.
- Be careful with claims such as “lifetime” or “never fades”. Everyone’s skin is different.
Quick care reminder
Put on perfume first, jewellery after. Wipe with a soft dry cloth after wearing. Keep it dry and store it in a pouch. Our full guide is here: How to care for 18K gold plated jewellery.
